YAML for Cloud & DevOps Masterclass
Master the universal configuration language behind GitHub Actions, Docker Compose, Kubernetes, and Helm. Learn the 2-space indentation law, avoid syntax pitfalls, and inspect your data structures in real time.
The 2-Space Indentation Law
YAML forbids the Tab character (\t). All nesting must use 2 spaces per level. Indentation defines the hierarchy.
name: web-api
port: 8080
Colon Followed by Space
Key-value pairs require a space immediately after the colon: key: value. Writing key:value without a space will crash the parser.
debug_mode: false
Hyphen + Space for Lists
Bullet point lists are defined using a hyphen and a space: - item. This is the foundation of GitHub Actions steps and Docker ports.

Complete YAML Curriculum (From Ground Zero to DevOps)
Level 0 — The Foundations, Types & The "Norway Problem"
YAML stands for "YAML Ain't Markup Language". Unlike HTML or XML which use closing tags (</tag>) or JSON which uses braces ({}), YAML uses whitespace indentation to represent data hierarchies.
Strings, Numbers & Booleans
Strings do not require quotes unless they contain special characters. Numbers are written plainly, and booleans are written in lowercase: true or false.
The Famous "Norway Problem"
In YAML 1.1, the unquoted text no, yes, on, and off are evaluated as booleans! If you write country: no, YAML interprets it as country: false. Always quote country codes: country: "no".
Level 1 — Sequences (Lists) & Mappings (Dictionaries)
Every cloud configuration file is a combination of two data types: Mappings (Key-Value pairs) and Sequences (Ordered lists marked with - ).
Lists of Objects
GitHub Actions workflow steps are lists of dictionaries. The hyphen indicates a new list item, and indented keys beneath it belong to that object.
Compact Inline Flow Syntax
YAML supports JSON-style square brackets for short lists: branches: [ "main", "staging" ] and curly braces for short maps: tags: { env: prod }.
Level 2 — Multiline Strings: The Pipe ( | ) vs Greater-Than ( > )
When configuring shell scripts or long descriptions in CI/CD pipelines, YAML provides two distinct multiline block styles:
Literal Block: The Pipe ( | )
Preserves every single line break exactly as typed. This is mandatory for multi-line bash scripts in GitHub Actions:
run: |
pytest tests/
black --check .
Folded Block: Greater-Than ( > )
Folds multiple lines into a single continuous paragraph, replacing newlines with spaces. Ideal for documentation descriptions and release notes.
Level 3 — Reusability & DRY Code with Anchors (&) and Aliases (*)
YAML has a built-in inheritance mechanism that prevents code duplication across multiple services in Docker Compose or multiple jobs in GitLab CI.
Define with Anchor (&)
Add &anchor_name to define reusable configuration chunks, such as database credentials or common container build options.
Merge with Merge Key (<<: *anchor)
Use <<: *anchor_name inside another service to inherit all keys from the anchor, while still allowing you to override specific fields.
Level 4 — Real-World Cloud Ecosystem Blueprints
YAML powers the entire modern DevOps toolchain. Click the templates at the top of the playground to load and inspect real-world blueprints:
Trigger on git push, provision Ubuntu runner, and run linters.
Multi-service composition: web app, postgres DB, and redis cache.
Deployments, replica scaling, readiness probes, and LoadBalancer services.
Automated infrastructure playbooks and parameterized cloud chart values.
Level 5 — Introduction to YAML, Serialization & Advanced Data Types
Master the core concepts of YAML, understand how Serialization & Deserialization work across cloud pipelines, and explore explicit data types.
🔄 Understanding Serialization vs. Deserialization in YAML
YAML (YAML Ain't Markup Language) is a human-readable data serialization language. When software applications communicate, configure servers, or launch containers, they continuously convert live data between computer memory and text files:
Converting live in-memory objects (such as Python dictionaries, arrays, or structs) into a readable YAML text file or string that can be saved to disk or transmitted over the network.
yaml_text = yaml.dump(python_dict)
Taking a raw YAML text file or stream (like a GitHub Action or docker-compose.yml) and parsing it into live in-memory objects that your program can query and execute.
data = yaml.safe_load(yaml_file)
yaml.safe_load(). Standard yaml.load() allows arbitrary Python object instantiation, which attackers can exploit to execute malicious code on your server!
🏷️ Explicit Scalar Tags
YAML automatically infers data types, but you can enforce explicit typing using double exclamation marks (!!):
zero: !!int 0(Integer)marks: !!float 54.47(Float)is_prod: !!bool true(Boolean)empty: !!null null(Null value)release: !!timestamp 2026-10-24(Timestamp)
🔢 Numeric Bases & Special Floats
Support for binary, hexadecimal, octal numbers, readable underscores, and IEEE floating-point values:
binary: 0b011011(Binary base-2)hexa: 0x34(Hexadecimal base-16)readable: 548_321(Underscore separator = 548321)infinite: .inf(Infinity float)not_a_num: .nan(Not a Number)
📦 Advanced Collections
Beyond standard lists and mappings, YAML defines specialized collection structures:
!!seq: Ordered sequences / arrays!!map: Key-value associative mappings!!pairs: Pairs allowing duplicate keys!!set: Unique item sets (with?notation)!!omap: Ordered maps preserving key sequence
🐍 Python PyYAML Safe Loading
Always use yaml.safe_load() to prevent arbitrary code execution vulnerabilities:
import yaml
with open("config.yaml", "r") as f:
config = yaml.safe_load(f)
print(config["deploy_environment"])
💻 Cross-Platform Installation: Linux, macOS & Windows
Because YAML is a data specification (plain text format), you do not install YAML itself as a binary. Instead, you install the Python PyYAML parser and the CLI tools (yq & yamllint):
pip install PyYAML
# Or OS package:
sudo apt install python3-yaml
2. CLI YAML Processor (yq):
sudo snap install yq
# Linter:
sudo apt install yamllint
pip install PyYAML
# Or Homebrew:
brew install pyyaml
2. CLI YAML Processor (yq):
brew install yq
# Linter:
brew install yamllint
py -m pip install PyYAML
# Or standard pip:
pip install pyyaml
2. CLI YAML Processor (yq):
winget install MikeFarah.yq
# Or Chocolatey:
choco install yq
